VW Vader Redux

This year for Halloween, my son wanted to be Darth Vader. Knowing that he couldn't wear the helmet after dark, we did the typical "shoot your kid in the front yard" bit before an evening trick-or treating event, so he could wear his helmet and show off a bit. After we were done and I started packing the stuff to go back in, I made the following observation: I had (A) a kid, (B) a Darth Vader costume, and (C) a Volkswagen. I talked him into keeping the stuff on for a little longer while I took some shots by the car. He didn't understand the irony in what we were doing until I showed him the video later. Now he wants to go out and shoot some more pictures.

Have a good Halloween, everyone, and be safe.

Sincerely, Vader's dad.

(No, seriously, I AM his father)

Selas Heat Technology Company, Streetsboro, Ohio

These are the offices for Selas Heat Technology Company in Streetsboro. Designed by Geis Companies, they represent an efficient renovation and repurposing of an existing facility for a new tenant. For me, they also represent an important life lesson.

As you can see from the photos, I shot this space before the tenants moved in, and I had the place to myself. This had its advantages and pitfalls. For me the pitfall was locking myself into the reception area (above), which is separated from the rest of the facility with a magnetic lock, and separated from the exterior with a deadbolt. After locking myself in, I called the client on my cell phone (as well as the tenant) for help getting out. Then, I managed to figure out the magnetic lock and freed myself.

The client got a discount for being unnecessarily bothered after hours for help, and I learned to make sure I have a cell phone with me at all times on a shoot (and check every lock).

Gary - Sandusky 2013

If you live in Northeast Ohio and own a fireplace, chances are good you know Gary Spolar of Century Chimney. He is my chimney sweep, and we're also friends. Last fall, after an overnight trip with our families, we spent a morning at the Sandusky Speedway, an older, half mile oval near Cedar Point. His wife bought him a spot with the "Rusty Wallace Racing Experience" (she had a Groupon....!). After suiting up and sitting in on a half-hour safety and technical class, he took to the track for 10 laps. He had a fun time, to be sure. I enjoyed capturing the moment.

Rosavelt: Cain Park 2013

Hard to believe it’s been a year since I last shot the band. Playing in support of their recent release The Last 10 Days, the lineup this evening included Kevin Grasha, Chris Allen, Tom Prebish, Fred Perez-Stable, and Don Dixon, playing at Cain Park’s Alma Theatre. With Kevin in Michigan and Chris in Cleveland, the band doesn’t get to play together as much as I’d like, so I’m glad I was able to catch them this time around.

This was my first time shooting at this venue. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

2013 Grand-Am: Mid-Ohio

This year, I shot the Friday sessions, and took my son to the race itself on Saturday. As a change of pace, I spent the whole day in the pit and paddock area, thinking I’d save myself from all the walking. It seemed like a great idea at the time, but, like many great ideas, it just didn’t pan out, and my feet were still sore at the end of the day. C’est la vie.
